What you need to know about Geoprobe® Probe Rods...
It all started with Geoprobe® brand 1.0 in. rods – formerly know around Geoprobe® HQ as the “Geoprobe® B thread”. The “B thread” was the designation given to the very first direct push thread design. All Geoprobe® brand threads to this date are based on that same proprietary rounded thread profile. Significant features have been added since then. Tapered profiles and multi-lead features were added to make the probe rods more user-friendly. As Geoprobe® direct push machines and hammers became larger and more powerful, the probe rods and thread designs have become increasingly aggressive to withstand the increased amount of energy this equipment delivers. The 1.5 in. probe rod is a prime example of an aggressive probe rod design necessitated by the brutal power of the GH60 hammer.

The power of the GH60 hammer can be compared to dropping a track unit on the tool string 30 times per second! That gives you an idea of how much stress the probe rod is exposed to every time you pull the hammer lever.

Industry interest in direct push methods for installation of permanent monitoring wells led to a significant change in probe rod design perspective. The need for a probe rod to have a very large ID, flush threads, and a strong thread joint with an O-ring, led to the development of 2.25 in. and 3.25 in. probe rods. Both probe rods were designed with monitoring wells in mind, but both are used daily in soil sampling applications. Additionally, these probe rods are commonly used for the placement of logging devices and sensors, as well as for the installation of Geothermal Wells.

As direct push technology continues to mature, we find the need for larger equipment and stronger tools. This creates numerous tooling options for our customers to decide upon. Some customers primarily do Macro-Core® soil sampling or monitoring well installations, and some customers do a little bit of both. Whatever your direct push application, chances are we have the probe rod you need to get the job done right – the first time.

At Geoprobe Systems®, we recognize, more than anyone in the industry, the need for a specific tool to do a specific job. Whether it’s sampling with 1.25 in. probe rods or installing a 1.5 in. Prepack monitoring well with 3.25 in. probe rods, we’ll have it covered along with everywhere in between.

Great Direct Push Machines Demand Great Tools!
Your Geoprobe® direct push machine requires great tools to get the job done right. And that’s just what we’ve got! Get ready to probe deeper, push further, and pound harder.

To meet this challenge, the engineers at Geoprobe Systems® examined several alternative thread patterns, and compared the results of extensive failure testing to arrive at a design that offers maximum benefits to the field user. Our probe rods offer unmatched durability, fatigue resistance, joint sealing, and ease of make up along with a bore of sufficient size to run implants and logging cables. Geoprobe® brand rods are manufactured and distributed exclusively by Geoprobe Systems®, all under exacting quality control procedures in order to assure that the product delivered to the field is the same product proven in field trials. The result is impressive!

In most all applications, the same Probe Rods, Drive Caps, and Pull Caps are used. Geoprobe® tools work best with Geoprobe® direct push equipment because they’ve been engineered and manufactured to endure the punishment of Geoprobe® GH60 and GH40 Series hammers.

You can recognize our tools because they feature . . .

  • O-ring groove for a watertight seal at each joint.
  • Hardened, rounded thread system for maximum durability.
  • Tapered end for easier joint make up ... only 1-3/4 turn!
  • Multi-lead design for quick connections to standard Geoprobe® samplers and logging tools.
  • More strength ... more rigidity ... less prone to bending or breaking.
  • Designed for installing Geoprobe® Prepacked Screen Monitoring Wells (3.25 in. and 2.25 in. rods).
  • Designed to withstand percussion probing: Maximum Strength and Minimum Diameter.
  • Many tools feature a corrosion-resistant finish that minimizes abrasion and scoring while also inhibiting oxidation of the steel.

Tools That Work Hard for You...
Your sampling and logging needs require not only great samplers and loggers, but also great tools in general. Probe rods are the workhorse of direct push hardware. The proper application of probe rods to a particular sampling need or site condition can make or break you. That’s why Geoprobe Systems® offers five different sizes of probe rods:

  • 3.25 in. Probe Rods, use everyday for dual tube soil sampling and well installation with 6600 series machines.
  • 2.25 in. Probe Rods, developed for installing wells and performing dual tube soil sampling.
  • 1.5 in. Probe Rods, designed specifically for 6600 series machines, but commonly used with 5400 series machines as well.
  • 1.25 in. Probe Rods, used primarily with 5400 series machines for various sampling applications.

Geoprobe® Tool Strength
Geoprobe® direct push tools are designed and built to exacting quality standards. Tools are subjected to rigorous inspection prior to delivery to the customer. Non-expendable Geoprobe® tools are coded with a batch number that is traceable to manufacturing and inspection records. The service life of a direct push tool is dependent upon the materials it is driven into, the type of sampling performed, the actions of the operator, and the energy of the driving mechanism. Breakage or damage to a part is not necessarily an indication that either the material or workmanship of the part is defective. Users should refer to the index in the back of the Geoprobe® Tools Catalog for the warranty terms and limitations.
